Cancun Swim With Sharks FAQ

Welcome to Contoy Excursions! We’re thrilled to offer you unforgettable marine adventures in the beautiful waters of Cancun. Below are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

About Our Tours & What to Expect
Q: What kind of shark encounters do you offer?
A: We primarily offer snorkeling tours with Whale Sharks during their migratory season. We also offer diving tours to see Bull Sharks (seasonal) and snorkeling/interaction with Nurse Sharks in controlled environments (like Xcaret Park, if you partner with them). We do not offer cage diving with predatory sharks.

Q: Are whale sharks dangerous? Is this experience safe?
A: Not at all! Whale sharks are often called “gentle giants” of the ocean. They are filter feeders, meaning they eat tiny plankton and small fish, posing no threat to humans. Your safety is our top priority, and our experienced guides ensure a safe and respectful interaction. We strictly adhere to all regulations regarding distance and interaction.

Q: When is the best time to swim with Whale Sharks in Cancun?
A: The Whale Shark season in Cancun typically runs from mid-May to mid-September. The peak season, with the highest concentration of whale sharks, is usually between mid-June and mid-August. We recommend booking during these months for the best chance of sightings.

Q: Can I dive with Whale Sharks?
A: No, current regulations in Mexico prohibit scuba diving with Whale Sharks. Only snorkeling is allowed to minimize disturbance to these magnificent creatures.

Q: When is the best time to dive with Bull Sharks in Cancun/Playa del Carmen?
A: Bull Sharks typically visit the waters off the Caribbean coast of Mexico (including Playa del Carmen, a short distance from Cancun) between November and March. This is the best time for dedicated bull shark diving excursions.

Q: Do I need to be an experienced swimmer for whale shark snorkeling?
A: You should have basic swimming skills and be comfortable in the open ocean. You will be wearing a life jacket, and our guides are always in the water with you to provide assistance. Please inform your guide if you are not a confident swimmer.

Q: How long do your tours last?
A: Our Whale Shark tours are generally a full-day experience, starting with hotel pick-up early in the morning (around 5:00 AM – 6:45 AM) and returning to your hotel in the early to mid-afternoon (around 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM), depending on your hotel location. Other snorkeling or diving tours may vary in duration.

Q: What is the maximum number of people per boat for whale shark tours?
A: To ensure a more intimate and comfortable experience, we limit our whale shark tours to a maximum of 10 people per boat, plus the captain, guide, and deckhand. This allows for more time in the water with the sharks.

Q: Are children allowed on the tours?
A: Yes, our Whale Shark tours are generally family-friendly! The minimum age is typically 4-5 years old, but please check specific tour requirements. Children are carefully looked after by our guides.

Q: Is there a guarantee of seeing sharks?
A: While sightings are very common during the peak season, we are dealing with wild animals in their natural habitat, so no guarantee of sightings can be made. It is rare for us not to see them, but it can happen due to natural conditions. We do not offer refunds in the event of no sightings.

Q: What if the weather is bad?
A: Your safety is our priority. If the port is closed by the Port Master due to unsafe weather or sea conditions, the tour will be canceled. We will notify you and offer the option to reschedule or receive a full refund.

Q: How do I book a tour?
A: You can book directly on our website, call us to reserve your spot, or send us a message specifying your desired date and number of participants.
